AR for Kids
Heritage digital educational e-games have provided a fundamental approach which makes a major contribution to children’s understanding of the cultural heritage (Haddad, 2016). As the gaming movement has evolved in recent years as a result of the development of 3D worlds, AR can contribute to Kid’s learning more effectively since the AR interactive feature quickly captures children’s interest and this feature encourages children's emotional and behavioral engagement (Ulukuz & WHITWORTH, 2016).
The following examples are the current trends and the ways cultulal institutions can use AR for Kids :
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Augmented Reality brought extinct animals to life in creative form, enabling children to understand more about them in a realistic way(INDE, n.d.).
Museum of Science & Industry
Another similar example to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. At theMuseum of Science and Industry, children are able to meet wild animals closely through the huge screen AR installation(INDE, n.d.).
Florida Museum of Natural History-Exhibits
Same large screen theme with AR experience is available in the Florida Museum of Natural History-Exhibits. It offers a unique platform for children to learn about natural history in a fun and interactive way and allows them to interact with the 3D creatures. This feature brings the museum’s Columbian mammoth skeleton to life through the screen with the life-sized animated mammoths(INDE, n.d.).
A Big Motive Designlab Experiment Night at the Bookstore
The Night at the Bookstore is one of the experiments in the Big Designlab. In this application, ‘The Gruffalo’ invites kids to join him as he follows the mouse through the local bookstore. Although this application is designed for a bookstore particularly kid’s section, cultural institutions like libraries might want to consider implementing this app for their kids' space as this AR feature will enhance childrens’ experience and their relationship with books.
Quiver (Application)
Kids can experience AR fun with apps like Quiver, a coloring book and app for an augmented reality that can bring the colorful pages of their children to life. From applications like Quiver, kids can have augmented reality fun experiences as this feature provides a coloring book and makes kids enable to bring the animal to life through the app.The free and premium image packs are available at quivervision.com
